My computer runs on windows XP. I am also looking to set up the Outlook express I am using to enable me to send and receive mails through a Gmail account. I would also love to have the ability of viewing the mails sent before these changes were effected.
Does anyone know how to do this? Because when I attempted to have these changes I was unable to view other mail received before the configuration. Please help me out.

You need to follow the settings so as all the information on the server can be downloaded to your Outlook Express and not delete it. When you check your Outlook settings, it most likely saves the settings of Outlook on .PST files instead of the .OST files.
That is how POP3 usually is setup. To verify, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Mail > Email accounts > Make sure Change Folder is set to your .PST file.
To save sent emails on webmail and outlook client, make sure option that says ‘Leave a copy of messages on the server’ is clicked same as the one shown below:
