Is Verizon giving the double data allowance for free?

I heard from my friend that he received an email from Verizon to double his existing 3GB data allowance to 6GB for free by calling a phone number. He had tried calling that number and got 6GB of date without costing a cent. I would like to know whether this is a genuine offer or a scam. Has anybody else got this offer from Verizon?

Yes, this is true and not a scam. This is only a limited promotion that lasted from October 2 until October 31, 2014 which is the same day when Sprint and AT&T offers expire. This promotion from Verizon started after AT&T announced that it would double the amount of data on higher-end family plans.

Before this or before AT&T announced the promotion, Sprint already made an announcement that they will double the data amount. So, if you will look at it, the promotion happened like a domino effect. When the first one started it, the rest followed. This move boosts the current trend by the carriers of presenting greater data capacity instead of a lower price.

Similar to the Sprint and AT&T plans, the promotion made by Verizon also only applies to shared family plan where multiple users get the same bucket of data.
