Good Day Neil max,
You know, multi-tab web browsing is used for multiple browsing at one of a time and at a single browser. It can help us to browse for more information (other web page) while you are currently on a first web page. In that case, it can help to make your browsing more comfortable, less hassle, and well-organized. Now a days, multi-tab web browsing has spread to all browsers in the world, e.g. Mozilla Firefox, Opera Browser, Internet Explorer, Safari, Google Chrome, Maxthon Browser, Netscape, Flock Browser, Camino, Sea Monkey, Konqueror and etc.

The very first time that I used a web browser to browse the internet was when I was still taking up my first course in college, not related to computers. And during those days, web browsers are still single tabbed. What I mean with single tabbed is you got to browse with only one website per instance of the browser. You cannot browse a second website without leaving your present page. In other words, you cannot open 2 websites at the same time with only 1 browser.
If you want to open another site without leaving your present page, you have to open another browser giving you 2 web browsers running or 2 instances of the same browser are running. When they added the multi-tab feature, it gives more freedom to web browsing activities. You cannot only browse 1 website at a time but 2 or more sites in one single instance of your favorite web browser.
