MS Word 2007 uses .docx extension to save the file by default.

If you want to save it as a .doc then you need to select the option Word 97-2003 document from “save as option” box

Once you have done it, then you will be able to open that .doc file from Word 2003 without any problems.

OR

you can also install the compatibility pack if you want to open, edit or save documents workbook and presentations created in newer versions of MS Office like 2007 etc.

Visit this link to download.

Just install it and follow the instructions.

If you have created the file using Office Word 2007. Save the document using the save as option. This will give a dialog box to choose the .doc using the 2003 option. Then it will be able to open when need be.
