USB Modems nowadays are just simply plug and play, its when you plug it you just simply follow the installation programs in the start and it will go on then smoothly. Once done, you can now use your newly installed device and browse the internet. However, there is also another key factor you should consider:

– You must know first if the USB modem supports your Operating System and if not is there any way or a file maybe to be installed first or needed to make the USB modem work.

This thing does happen, I have a USB modem that only supports XP, but I change my operating system to Windows 7 and I need a certain file to install first before it worked for me.

I think you are planning on installing a 3G / 4G mobile broadband modem USB stick on your computer running on Linux Ubuntu and you are not sure whether if it’ll run or not. The answer to this problem you are having will be based on the compatibility of the modem’s software with your operating system.

Since this is a mobile modem in the form of a USB stick just like the one I have, you should check the documentation of your device and see if the modem’s application or software is compatible with Ubuntu. You will find the technical specifications of the device on the packaging of the modem usually printed at the back of the box. Check if the software of the modem supports Ubuntu or not. And if not, you should then visit the official website of the device to find another version of the software that works with your operating system.
