Hi Donald,

There are several things that may have caused the error. Try these troubleshooting steps:

1. Check whether your internet is working.

2. Make sure that your popup blocker is turned off on your IE.

Do these steps, open IE, click the "Tools" tab, and then click "Popup Blocker", and then select "Turn Off"

3. Make sure that apple.com is on your trusted sites list.

Do these steps, on IE windows, click the "Tools" tab, and select "Internet Options", and click "Security tab", and click on "Trusted Sites Icon", click on "sites…" and then add "https://www.apple.com/" as the trusted site.

4. Check the firewall setting of your antivirus software or check whether apple.com is not in your reject list.

Do these steps, when the firewall or anti-virus security software opens, verify the official site is available, if the site is unavailable, disable the software temporarily.

5. Check your router and/or ISP if iTunes is blocked on either the modem or router.

If you have a router, you must open Port 3689 for iTunes.

If you only have a modem, contact your ISP to help you unblock the iTunes site.

Hope this works for you Donald.

I guess iTunes can’t connect or login to your Apple ID and assumed a network failure. So in this case, you should check your internet connection. Open your web browser and visit some websites. If you verified that there is no problem with your internet connection, the problem is probably with iTunes itself.

Since your current version can’t connect to the server to check for updates or even sign in to your account, download the latest version manually. Visit Download iTunes 12.1 and download the latest version. For Windows, it supports Windows XP Service Pack 3, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. If you have 64-bit Microsoft Windows, don’t download this version.

For 64-bit or x64 Microsoft Windows, visit iTunes 12.1.0 [64-bit]. It requires 64-bit Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8. Windows XP is not supported in this version. Once downloaded, uninstall the existing iTunes then restart your computer. Install version 12.1 then try signing in to your account. If you still can’t download or purchase content from the Apple store, sign out of your account and then sign in back.

Also, check if you have unfinished downloads that may prevent you from downloading or purchasing new contents. If you have incomplete downloads, delete them.
