Unified Messaging in VMWare and Exchange 2010

We are planning in virtualizing our Exchange 2010 environment. Has anyone done this before? Is there anything from Microsoft that says/suggests that this should not be done? We will also be setting up Unified Messaging soon, which would be on VMWare, when I researched on this before, it was recommended that UM should be on physical kit and not on virtual.

It would be greatly appreciated to hear any suggestions that could help us in finally deciding on this.

During the virtualizing of your exchange 2010 some of the very important things that you will need to keep in mind are the configurations that are required for MS to support Exchange 2010 in a virtual environment. Make sure that you have set them properly.

You also need to know that you cannot be able to combine any kind of "Root clustering" with any sort of Microsoft Exchange HA, and with that the possibility of using DAGs with VMotion is ruled out. You will also need to know that VMotioning a DAG member breaks the DAG and therefore the reason why it is not advisable to use it.
