I am using windows XP and my windows is connected to LAN server. In windows firewall option I see that this option is disabled for me and I am unable to change windows firewall on or off. Even I cannot change exceptions and other settings for that. It shows a heading that "You must be a computer administrator to change these settings. I am afraid why is this happening.

First you must log in your "Administrator" account to make changes on your Firewall. If you are not yet the administrator, make your account the "Administrator". Here's how:

Go to Control Panel > User Accounts > Select your Account > Select Change Account Type > Select Choose Computer Administrator. Click Change account type activate it.

Now, you can change your Firewall settings.

I think the solution of your problem is very simple.Either you are not using the 'Administrator' login or your login user do not have administrative rights. We can change the firewall settings only when we have administrative rights.Normal user can not change the firewall settings.

You might have 3rd party security firewall that the current state is active and enabled.

Check your computer if their is McAfee, Norton or other security software. You need to disabled the firewall feature before you can activate your Windows Security Firewall.

Computer doesn't allow 2 security firewall that is running. one or the other must be disabled before you can activate the other security software.

Go to Start, Control Panel, System and Security.
Go to Windows Firewall and on the left panel, click on Turn Windows Firewall on or off
Put a tick on Turn on Windows Firewall

Hello Mismahindar,

The first possibility as to why you may be receiving that problem is probably because you have not logged into the system with the administrator account, or may be the administrator account that you have does not have the credentials for editing and changing the firewall settings. So just check that and then log in as the administrator with all the privileges of you have not,

Another possibility could be that your computer has been infected with a virus that has completely blocked your firewall, and therefore you will need to try running system restore and see if you can remove the virus and restore the system to a previous state.
