Unable to open a movie error message

I have QuickTime software installed on my Mac Os X 10.5 machine. There are a few .mp4 movie files which I am trying to view with my QuickTime software.

When I try to open the files with QuickTime it comes up with an error message

The movie could not be opened.

An invalid public movie atom was found in the movie.

I tried playing the same .mp4 file in Windows with QuickTime and it comes up with the same error message.

Is this format not supported or do I have some issue with the file itself?

The solution for this is you may try to install software that adds multiple codes to the QuickTime application like Perian. It appears that the codes of the video you are trying to view is not supported by the QuickTime application that you are using. This instance suggests that there are only a few codes supported by QuickTime.

When trying to open a video file and an error message prompts that the movie cannot be opened. An invalid public movie atom was found in the movie. It means that an error happened while the program is converting the codes of the video which is eventually not supported causing a conflict.

There are programs that convert movies or videos with codes from xvid/divx to formats that suits AppleTv/iPods. However, if the software required supporting the required codes is not installed, it now prompts the error.

Mark Wright,

here the problem is that the movie file you were trying to play has a problem. The error usually occurs when a video has been converted to a format for  which the correct codec isn't installed. Therefore, the most basic solution for this error is to download the correct codec from the internet by googling. The correct codec in this case should be the .Mp4, Mkv or .Flv.

Once you download the codec, install it to your computer.

You will need to install it to a drive that has enough free memory needed. e.g Cprogram filesquicktimecodecsmp4.exe ;

After installing, go to Start->All Programs->QuickTime and open it ;

Run the codec on QuickTime and try replaying the movie ;

The movie should be able to play.

You are using a player with a low codecs.  If you want to play all types of video files, then please install k-lite codec. It will be able to play any type of video files.

Thanks.
