Unable to install Guest Additions on Windows 8.1 Preview

I recently installed Windows 8.1 Preview from an ISO. Followed by that is that I tried installing Guest Additions 4.2.14 but it didn't work. The error says, it won't work on this Windows version. I even tried to install it under compatibility mode but it also didn't work. I checked if Windows 8.1 is compatible with VirtualBox and it appears it is already compatible. What are the workarounds to resolve this problem? Please help.

I’m not sure if you can really install VirtualBox Guest Additions on your computer because you are using Windows 8.1. Though Windows 8 is fully supported by the latest version of VirtualBox, it still has some issues remaining and thinking that the issues reported were from Windows 8, what more can you expect on using Microsoft Windows 8.1 which is newer than Windows 8.

If users of Windows 8 already have headaches installing VirtualBox, don’t expect it to be smooth in Windows 8.1. For the operating system requirement, VirtualBox supports Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Millennium, Windows NT, Windows Server 2003 32-bit or 64-bit, Windows Server 2008 32-bit or 64-bit, Windows Server 2008 R2 32-bit or 64-bit, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 2000, Windows XP 32-bit or 64-bit, Windows Vista 32-bit or 64-bit, Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit, and Windows 8 32-bit or 64-bit.

For Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium, the Guest Additions feature is not supported. VirtualBox performance is also slow because it is not optimized for these operating systems. For Windows NT, there are also some issues regarding old Service Packs. When using VirtualBox with this operating system, it is recommended to upgrade to Service Pack 6a.

Finally going to Windows 8, I already mentioned that there are several issues when installing Guest Additions. And also, your processor should also include support for AMD-V or VT-x. To check if one of these features is supported by your processor, visit Intel Hardware Accelerated Execution Manager. I think if you don’t have this on your processor you won’t be able to install Guest Additions.
