Unable to connect via wireless to my laptop.

I acquired a scanner/printer which I have been unable to connect via wireless to my laptop. The scanner/printer is an HP Photosmart B110 wireless. My laptop is a Toshiba with Windows Vista installed on it. The problem I have in setting up the wireless connection with the scanner/printer is that an error message keeps coming up indicating that “MAC address filtering is enabled” and this is what blocks the connection.

How do I get past this problem? Thank you.

Most computers have their Mac address filter turned off by the manufacturer, and therefore you will need to access it and enable it as follows:

  1. On your computer you will need to click Start and then Run
  2. Type command in the search box and then press Enter
  3. In the command line , you will need to type ipconfig /all in the command prompt window and then press Enter
  4. And then you will need to look for the line that is labeled physical access address in the information that will be displayed. That is the MAC address for that adapter and therefore you will need to make sure that it is turned ON.

If that message keeps appearing then that means MAC filtering is activated on your Wi-Fi router. If this is the case, only the MAC addresses of the devices you added before will be allowed to connect to the network. Connecting a printer to your laptop wirelessly can be done in two ways: via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

If your Wi-Fi router has the MAC filtering activated, you won’t be able to connect any device. You have to disable MAC filter first before a new device can connect. Once the filter is disabled, connect the printer to your Wi-Fi then add the MAC address of the printer to the allowed MAC addresses then enable MAC filtering again.

To disable MAC filtering, first, open your web browser then enter the IP address of your router and then log in to the Wi-Fi router’s control panel. In my router, I use without quotes “192.168.22.1” to log in to the control panel. Check with your manual about the login details of your router.

Next, go to “Advanced” section then look for something like “MAC Filtering”, “Access Control”, or something similar. Next, disable MAC filtering then save the changes. Now, connect the printer to your Wi-Fi.
