Hi Experts,

I am stuck in a situation where the remote host is inaccessible. It is possible that it might be down or might have been blocked by a firewall. When attempting to import a physical computer to VMWare I encounter the error listed below

Unable to connect to the remote VMWare Converter Agent.
The remote host is not accessible using Microsoft Network Services. It might be down or firewalled.

In anticipation of your response.

Unable to connect to the remote VMWare Converter Agent

Hello Karen,

The error that you are getting could be occurring because of the following:

  • The request to login using the IPC$ share was not successful. This is not the same as a bad user name or password error.
  • The default administrative shares could be disabled. Note that these shares need the VMWare Converter agent to be installed and also allow the P2V process to occur,
  •

The following are the resolutions to those issues:

Issue 1:

You will need to use the TCP/IP address of the NIC bound to File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, or you can just bind the second NIC to that service.

Issue 2:

You can just enable the default administrative shares on the target computer.

Regards,

Carl
