During the process of turning off my PC, all the icons on my desktop disappear for some time, and then reappear. Does this happen, or is somebody accessing my PC through a backdoor or something? I have AVG antivirus on this PC, but I am still anxious.  This is why I am seeking advice from you professionals out there. Please help!

Hello Ava,

I suggest you to turn on your computer in safe mode. This will help your computer to be more safe and to avoid disappearing icons. You can also follow the steps below to reboot  your system in safe mode:

  • Restart or Turn on your computer
  • If your computer is already on, press the F8 key until advanced boot option appears
  • Then to highlight the option, you can use the up down arrow keys
  • Choose SAFE mode networking and hit enter
  • Just wait until drivers stop loading
  • You will see the welcome screen
  • You can now log on to your computer as an administrator

Does the computer turn off successfully after this happens? Because if it does, then there should be no need to worry as this sometimes happens in Windows. However, if after trying to turn the computer off and this happens and the computer remains turned on, then you need to have your computer scanned for a very likely virus or malware infection. If you are infected though, and the scan is interrupted by the infection and it does not complete, you can go to safe mode and run a scan. Programs such as Malwarebytes' Antimalware can run in safe mode and is quite good at detecting there infections.

I don’t think it’s unusual because your system is shutting down. As you shut down your computer, the operating system starts to terminate every service running on the platform including the component responsible for displaying all the icons on the desktop. If you doubt it that a virus is doing it, try scanning your computer. Update your antivirus then perform a full system scan on your machine.

You can also use Sophos Virus Removal Tool. This tool is perfect for computers that are already infected and it works alongside any antivirus program you may have. You don’t need to disable or uninstall your antivirus. Once it is installed, start Sophos then wait for the virus signature database to get updated. Once updating is complete, click to start scanning your machine.

The tool scans everything on your computer including external devices connected via USB port. When a virus is found at the end of the scan, remove it then repeat the scan over and over until it no longer detects a virus.
