Touchpad not working on Dell laptop

I have a Dell laptop, just out of warranty, and the touchpad isn't working.  For the most part I use a wireless mouse, but when I want the laptop to be portable, I can't always use the touchpad. I've tried running anti-virus software, thinking that might be the culprit, but everything came back clean.  I don't want to pay for an expensive repair.  Any suggestions as to what might be causing this?  I don't recall any damage to the area.  Thank you.

Well Sandra, try to use 'troubleshoot' option for detecting an issue regarding your touchpad. A window will automatically detect issues and solve them.

Disable touchpad and enable it after 2-3 minutes.
Go to 'Control panel' select mouse/touchpad in 'Hardware and Sound' click the 'Dell Touchpad tab' select 'Click to change Dell Touchpad setting' and you will fine on/off option there.

Or check the installed drivers for Touchpad maybe they're missing.
Right click on 'Computer' then 'Properties' and go into 'Device Manager' make sure all system drivers were installed properly.
