Hi,

I am a beginner when it comes to Toshiba laptops since I just recently bought one (Satellite L355) 6 months ago. And I have a problem with its battery life which started last week. When I am traveling and running it by battery, it only lasts for a couple of minutes, 17 minutes is the most. I tried lowering the brightness of the display but still, the same result. I want to buy an extra battery for it, but I am a bit hesitant since the battery has only been used for 6 months considering that I only travel twice a month.

And also, I am using Windows Vista as my Operating System. What should I do?

Laptop battery life may differ depending on the battery itself. When it comes to retaining charge when the battery is fully charged, you may find on battery lasting up to 8 hours while another one can only last for two hours. So whichever battery you will buy will matter a lot when it comes to the time it will retain the battery.

You are saying that your battery has lasted for only six months and now it can retain charge for only 17 minutes. I guess that has been caused by how you have been maintaining the battery. Laptop battery maintenance is so important because it determines the lifetime of the battery. Some of the things that you are required to do to make sure that you battery lasts for long are:

  • Avoid overcharging the battery. When the battery is full, disconnect it from the power source.
  • You should also clean the battery contacts occasionally to get rid of any dirt that may be accumulating on them.
  • In case you are using the laptop near a power source, then you can remove the battery and connect the charge directly to the power source.

With measures like those, you may be sure that your battery will last longer.

It looks like you are running your laptop on a very heavy program or such a program that takes too much of computer resources like a graphic program, videos and things like this. I want to tell you that most of laptops will work for up to 30 minutes if they are used on playing a game from battery. You can just read your documents or other things that takes no computer resources and then you will see that this time is increased to up to two hours in many cases.

The other thing here i can say that your battery life is damaged due to overheat or some other purpose. So you can replace it by another battery. There are almost two types of batteries now available in market. you can choose one as per your requirements.

Thank you for your comments, I'll be sure to note your suggestions. I guess my next move is to buy a new battery. However, to Thompson, I am not sure how "cleaning the battery contacts occasionally to get rid of any dirt" would have something to do with battery life because if the contacts are not contacted properly then it will render the laptop unusable without of course the direct power.
