My wife uses an Apple Lap, the mov files she has cannot be played in my Windows Laptop.
Is there any free mov avi mac osx software available, using which I can convert
mov files to avi files.Â

MOV files are used on Mac computers mainly played by Quick Time Player. But I found nice application called MOV to AVI Converter and it does exactly what it's name says, converting MOV to AVI. It is quite good application and is also popular. People made good reviews about it so don't worry about it's functionality.

I would suggest using Handbrake, since it has the best codecs for converting Apple media to mp4 or mkv. It is very much user-friendly as well, and new encoders like you would really have an easy time using. You can get it here:
Alternatively, if you don't want any converting done, you can download VLC Media player on you Windows machine.
It is arguably the best media player for any windows machine out there, and fairly easy to use. It can play just about any format you can offer it. You can get VLC here:
