It’s impossible to pause downloads in Mac OS X Mountain Lion. You need to complete a download first whenever you pause an existing one. This actually happens because it makes sure that the downloaded file is complete and no issues of corrupted files will occur. Don’t try to pause the download when you’re halfway or almost done, it will restart the whole process!
No, you can't, it has to be downloaded at one time only. If you paused it will restart from the beginning.
There is an option.
As a last resort, download it from unofficial sources which support resuming.
If you want to download big files like 3 or 4 GB you should go to the nearest Apple store and they will help you. Because todays broadband speed is not so good.
