What should I do? My PC flashed a "Windows rootsystem 32hal.dll error message." I tried rebooting and doing safe mode to no avail. Would I be able to recover my files?

This is very rare to happen if your hard drive is well maintained. You are getting a hal.dll error maybe because the file was deleted or moved from its original location. If you can still browse the contents of your hard drive, try searching for hal.dll on your whole hard drive. If you found the file then maybe it is already corrupted. Try restoring the file from the original Windows XP installer disc. Try to figure out which cabinet files (.cab) does hal.dll is located then extract and copy it to the right location.

Or you may just download the hal.dll file at https://www.dll-files.com/hal.dll.html then copy it to C:WINDOWSsystem32. Click on the “DOWNLOAD ZIP-FILE” link to download the file. You may also check your computer for any further errors. It is possible that your hard drive has errors in the file system that’s why one of your system files got corrupted.
