Switching from a PC to a Mac

Hello,

I’m in the middle of switching from a PC to a Mac. While transferring my backup files from my Windows-formatted external Hard Drive to my new iMac I keep on receiving an Error 36 message. My backup files include photos, music, document files and so on.

Last year I transferred a few files from the same Hard Drive to my MacBook and can’t remember having any issues. This time I’m transferring all of my backup files. After some research I have tried some solutions, for example, terminal>dos_clean, but these have not worked and I still receive the same error.

Are there alternatives to transferring over my files to my iMac without formatting the Drive?

Hello Ruth,

To transfer the backup files, you will need to copy the content of the following 2 folders:

  • %USERPROFILE%My DocumentsMy MusiciTunes
  • %USERPROFILE%Application DataApple ComputeriTunes

You will need to have iTunes installed on the new computer, and then you will start it and close it. Do not allow it to search for music. After that, you will need to find the locations of the above folders, and then you will do the following:

  • You will need to copy all the files in the above folders across.
  • And then you will start iTunes and then authorize the new computer.
  • You can now transfer the files.

Regards,

Carl
