I often work with databases and have a constant need to back up data whenever possible. I am often force to use pen drives and the transfer speed is a big issue for me. Is there a way to speed up the transfer rate for pen drives? I know that SSD and external hard drive are faster but I have to think of portability at the end of the day.

Other than trying to increase the speed of any old pen-drive you should buy a new pen-drive which has faster speed. In the market you will get many faster pen-drive which are using USB 3.0. Below are the few fastest pen-drive:

1.    IronKey workspace W300 64GB pen-drive

Read speed>400MB/s

Write speed>316MB/s

2.    SanDisk Extreme 64GbB pen-drive

Read speed>230MB/s

Write speed>200MB/s

3.    Lacie Xtremkey 32GB pen-drive

Read speed>230MB/s

Write speed>90MB/s

4.    Silicon Power Marvel M50 32GB pen-drive

Read speed>90MB/s

Write speed>60MB/s

All these are USB 3.0 device. So when you will attach this with PC make sure that you are connecting in a USB 3.0 port to get better speed and performance.

There is no such solution or software for this issue. Atmost , you can try following methods to make it work better

1. If the device is very old, replace it with a new one.

2. Format it everytime you finish your work, this will clear all the viruses or error files from the device.

3. Try buying a pen drive with USB version 2.0, as it is the latest one and gives a speed of 35 mbps.
