Router firmware is the software inside your device. Whether you are using wired or wireless routers, they automatically have firmware. What firmware does is that it works on a portion of the network protocols for the security mechanism and administrative capabilities of the router’s hardware.

Once a router is manufactured, it automatically has a firmware to make sure that it can unleash great capabilities for the user’s connection. However, this installed firmware are created to be upgraded online to make them work better than expected specially when it comes to connecting faster to the internet.

To upgrade your router’s firmware you should know what your router is (brand and model number) to be able to get to the manufacturer’s website and see if there are firmware updates available for your device.

It is really not necessary that you update your router’s firmware version to have a better connection. This is not always the case. Updating the router’s firmware only makes the device more compatible to latest hardware versions or models.

They do this to make older products compatible to newer devices to avoid unnecessary errors during connection or during the operation of the device. This also makes the device work a little faster since it runs on the latest software. Applying latest firmware fixes the bugs that were present before and upgrades its functions and features to make computing easy.

Even if you upgrade your router’s firmware if the device is already slow in the first place then you still wouldn’t have a better connection. The device’s speed will simply stay the same but will only improve the way it process data across the network. The best way of improving your connection’s speed for older routers is to buy a new one with faster features compared to the older one.

Or if you don’t want to replace your existing device then the least you can do is to optimize your computer’s speed to have a better network access.

This is the same with a Huawei 3G mobile broadband USB modem. Purchasing it will only allow you to do text messages from the dashboard and will give you 3.6 Mbps. But after upgrading its firmware, you will now be able to do phone calls from the dashboard directly from your computer besides sending text messages but still the modem’s speed is fixed at 3.6 Mbps.
