Hello fellow techyv members,

I am sick of carrying around my SLR.  It is huge and heavy.

Can you recommend an everyday point and shoot camera that has a really quick start up?

Regards,

Have you considered using a digital camera that works like an SLR? It is called a bridge camera. You may want to consider it if you are not really concentrating on a type of photography and wants an excellent quality, meaning it is a multipurpose camera. Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 has 18x optical zoom, has Automatic, Manual, AF, and macro mode and only weighs 417g. It has fast and precise focusing which makes it a very good bridge camera.

Nikon Coolpix P500 weighs lighter of only 365g and has 36x zoom which can give you super zoom and superwide images great for wide angle shots. Kodak EasyShare Z1015 IS, boasts of its versatility of 28mm lens and 15x optical zoom and image stabiliser with 10MP quality prints. It also has a smart capture that has a scene detection feature, which can analyze the scene's condition and has a ISO 80 – ISO 3200.

Fujifilm FinePix S100FS has a 2.5 inch tilting display, multibracketing function, high speed shooting and a movie function. With a 11 megapixels and 14 times optical zoom weighs a little bit heavy of 900g with batteries.

Actually there are a lot more bridge cameras that you may just want to choose and buy for your own discretion.

Goodluck on finding one!
