Hello Toby

Sharp has started production of world's first IGZO LCD pannels in MArch 2012 while  Sony has introduced its prototype crystal LED TV in 2012 CES Eevent. Some major differences between both are given here,

1.Technically speaking, crystal LED technology uses LEDs (light emitted diodes) to display picture and number of LEDs controls the picture quality, while IGZO LCD uses semiconductor made of IGZO which consists indium (In), gallium (Ga), and zinc (Zn) oxides and this controls the picture quality.

2. Maximum display size of Sharp IGZO LCD pannels is 32 inches as sharp is mainly focusing on medium and small size displays for notebooks and tablets while Crystal LCD displays are available in much larger sizes even in 55 inches.

3. IGZO LCDs are available with maximum 8.3 million pixels approx. While crystal LEDs are available with maximum 6 million pixels.

4. A special feature of IGZO LED is the use of UV2A technology that precisely controls the alignment of LCD molecules in a LCD panel structure.

I hope you will find the answer helpful.

Regards.

The word IGZO stands for Indium Gallium Zinc Oxide. It is a semiconducting material developed by both Semiconductor Energy Laboratories and Sharp Corporation. It is a substitute for amorphous silicon for the active layer in an LCD screen and is also used as the channel for translucent thin-film transistor. It has a forty times higher electron mobility compared to the usual amorphous silicon.

With this, it allows greatly higher speed reaction for screen, and or smaller pixels for screen resolutions higher than HDTV. Just early this year, Sharp unveiled its 32-inch 4K resolution IGZO LCD monitor at the 2013 International CES in Las Vegas. The company described that using the IGZO technology produces more natural image with better presence. It produces just about double the resolution of present LCDs. I also learned that Apple is planning on adopting the IGZO technology as the LCD screen for the next iPhone.
