Just like Yahoo! Messenger or simply YM, you can add a person on your list if you know their email address. But if not, you can still search their name in the MSN Directory. Here’s how you can do this in your MSN Messenger:

1. In the MSN Messenger main window, click Contacts.
2. Select Search for a Contact.
3. Click Advanced Search.
4. After that, fill out the search form then hit Search.

If by any chance you can’t find the person in the MSN Directory, he or she might not have a Microsoft .NET Passport email address. Each of your MSN Messenger contacts must have a Passport-enabled email address and MSN Messenger [or Windows Messenger] installed in order for you to exchange instant messages.
