What are the detailed steps to adhere to service an optical mouse successfully? What are the safety measures to consider in performing this task? I have an optical mouse which for some time now is not responding properly. I suspect the cause to be dirt and dust. I would be very happy if I get the necessary assistance from you. Thank you.

Hi Scott P Daniels,

I am more than happy to assist you! Please follow the steps given below carefully:

1. Switch off your computer and unplug the mouse.

2. Look carefully at the lens at the bottom of the mouse. If you are able to see any debris, try to blow it out. If this doesn't work use a cotton swab that was immersed in rubbing alcohol to clean it out.

3. If there is any dust on the rubber pads on the bottom of the mouse use a toothpick to clean it out.

4. Take a damp clean cloth to remove any remaining dirt or dust on the pads of the optical mouse.

5. Switch on the computer and plug in the mouse and enjoy your squeaky clean mouse!

Hi,

Generally the servicing of an Optical Mouse is not needed. What is the issue with the mouse ? If the pointer is not moving after connecting the mouse to CPU, the trouble could in the CPU port also. But as a first step, you need to connect this mouse to another PC and see it is working or not. If found working, the problem is with the PC. If found not working, better to look for a new mouse. Servicing the mouse is very rare which can not give any positive result. Considering the cost of a new mouse, better get a new one from the market.
