Hi Experts,

Current operating system of my machine is Windows Vista. I tried to edit Registry and got an error message. It says “Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator”.

I tried regedit.exe. I have no idea about that message of Registry Editor. Please help me to get a remedy of the issue.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Jair,

Your system is like infected with malware. That’s if not done on purpose by your administrator. To resolve the issue here the procedure for your windows vista operating system

  • Click Start, type gpedit.msc in the Search box, and press ENTER
  • Local Group Policy Editor utility should initialized/run.
  • Click on “Administrative Template” under User Configuration
  • Click on “System”
  • Look for “Prevent Access to registry editing tools”
  • Double click it. Then set as “Not Configured.”

That should enable your Registry.

Hello Jair,

This issue is possibly caused by a malware infection on your computer. Some would change files/programs in your computer particularly the registry editor.

One example of which is the registry editor program could have been duplicated by the virus and that is the one being run instead of the original one. Check for duplicates of the program Registry Editor.

You can follow these steps:

1) Open command prompt and go to, c:windows
2) Look for duplicate instances of Regedit.exe (could be regedit.com) and delete it.
3) Once deleted, restart your computer and launch Regedit again.
