Hello Daniel Vettori,

Wi-Fi acrony is Wireless Fidelity. This uses frequency to broadcast wireless signal, often has limitation would reach about 200-100 Ft. Laptop computers has Wi-Fi switch on the side and sometimes in the upper right hand corner depending on the brand of the machine. Cell phones also has Wi-Fi built-in wireless adapter that allows you to connect to the Internet if it detects wireless signal.

Some internet Service Provider provides free Wi-Fi access and called hotspot, where certain locations has wireless signal that allows their subscriber uses their network to use free access. The purpose of this is to attack most subscribers to subscribe to their company, it's more like a marketing strategy. Here's the link where you can learn about Wi-Fi. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi Hope this explained your horizon a bit.

WiFi commonly uses to refer a wireless technology or wireless fidelity. WiFi Zone is those areas with wireless accessibility or what they called Hot Spots or WiFi Access Points. In this area, you can connect your device via WiFi hotspots or WiFi access point to access the internet.

WiFi hotspots or WiFi access points are the one who open the communication for internet connection. Private WiFi access points are mostly password protected while WiFi spots in Malls, Food Chains and other public establishments are open to access.

Turning on your WiFi device in your phone doesn’t mean you are already connected to the Internet. You need to connect on WiFi access point in order to access the internet. Try this link for a better understanding about WiFi Phones: http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-a-wifi-phone.htm.
