What do you mean by default gateway? What if I don't have this kind of router and a workstation can still be configured to browse the Internet and still not have a default gateway?
It is a node act as an access point to another network which is on TCP/IP network. When IP does not match with the IP’s is routing table default gateway is used. It is a device that is used to pass the traffic of local subnet to other subnets. It connect a local network to the internet.
You can connect to internet by the static or dynamic IP’s. If you use the public IP address then you can browse to the internet. If it is having an intranet address a gateway is needed as a router or firewall to communicate with internet.
A default gateway acts as an IP router or an access point that is used by a networked computer or a computer connected to a network. The computer uses it to send information on the internet or to a computer on a different network. Default signifies that this gateway is used by default except when an application specifies a different gateway.
A default gateway allows communication between computers on a network and computers on another network. The network is isolated or inaccessible from the outside without it. Computers basically send data bound for other networks by means of the default gateway, one that doesn’t belong to its local IP range.
