I have a problem in saving my MS Excel files created from the earlier version 97-2003 to the newer version which is 2007. Sometimes when I do this, some formula will not work properly. A notification appears that some of the formulas and data will not update will not be updated. How will I solve this problem?

Is there a button I should click so that the whole file will work?

There are two things that I will suggest that you do:

  • First, you will need to make sure that when saving your document in the recent version of excel that you have on your computer, you are saving the document in the compatibility format as follows: Go to file >> Save as >> Excel 97-2003 workbook and then save it.
  • The second thing that you may want to do is upgrade the version of excel that you are using on the other computer. If you are using the older version of excel like excel 2003, then you will need to upgrade to the latest version which could be excel 200 7 or the ms excel 2010.

If the files were created with Microsoft Office Excel 2003, the file format used is still XLS (*.xls). Opening this file with a much newer version of Microsoft Office Excel like Microsoft Office Excel 2007 should not be a problem because newer versions are backward compatible, meaning, they can open files created using older versions of the program.

Now, to make sure the new formulas contained or added to the file are maintained and updated, when you open the file in Microsoft Office Excel 2007 or newer, you need to save it using the current format supported by the application which is XLSX (*.xlsx).

If you don’t save the file in the new format and you retain the original format used by Microsoft Office Excel 2003, formulas you added that has new format that is not supported in the older application will just be discarded.
