Hello Laurel

I have experienced the same error. I also did a lot of research for this. It turned out that I was updating that version of Ubuntu for which support had been stopped from the Ubuntu Community. I was using 8.10 for which Long term Support had been stopped a year back. So, depending upon the version of the Ubuntu you are using you may want to check that whether support is available for your version, because the repositories keep on changing with time.

Hope this helps.

Happy Computing 🙂

That problem seems to be with your internet connection. If your computer is connected to a Wi-Fi router with a network cable, disconnect the cable from the network port then plug it back in. If this doesn’t work, disconnect the other end of the cable from the router then connect it back. If this doesn’t work either, restart the router.

If the Wi-Fi router has a power button, press it to turn it off then unplug it from the power for about twenty (20) seconds. Press any button on the router to discharge any leftover power or to power cycle. After this, plug the router back to the power and turn it on.
