Problem with my internet connection

Dear IT Experts,

My internet connection was working ok for a long time. But ever since my roommate installed a new router, I couldn’t connect to the internet.

Her connection is working just fine but mine doesn’t want to connect.

Is there anything you could suggest to fix my connection?

Thanks,

Dennie

Hi Dennie,

I think your problem has to do with  the newly installed router. If your previous internet connection has no router, just the modem only, then  you'll have to try the following steps. Since your router  now has the IP address and  DNS address set in to it.

  1. Verify that your network cable – commonly called Ethernet cable or UTP cable is connected to the available slots, at the back of your router.
  2. Click Start -> Control Panel ->  Network Connections.
  3. Click Local Area Connections.
  4. In the General Tab – Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
  5. Click Properties button.
  6. Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
  7. Select Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  8. Click OK and restart your computer.

This will solve your internet connection problem.

Thank you.

Jeffrey

if your using a wireless connection, check your network if you a have an access to his router.

If you have access, check if he requires you to enter a network key.  Ask him for a key then try to connect.  But if your using a wired connection, try to fix your cord if it is really connected to the router.

  • For wireless connection, first you must check your desktop/laptop if you have a wireless card installed. Second you must know the password of your WiFi router, that your roommate installed.
  • For wire connection, first you must check the Ethernet / UTP cable if it is plugged in, on your desktop/laptop. Second check your Ethernet  / UTP cable if it's connected on your router.

If you still don't have an internet connection, please read the user manual of the router and if you need to configure the router from your desktop / laptop, just follow the steps on the user manual of the router.
