Hi! When I want to install a new application on my Windows XP with SP2 I’m getting a message that tells me I need to install .Net Framework 2.0. If I go to the Microsoft website, I have the option to download dotnetfx.exe.

Can anyone tell me if I need other files beside this one or if this application comes on the Windows XP install disk?

Hi Neil,

.NET Framework is essential for most application to work. To check whether you have .NET Framework 2.0, you have to see information in the registry. These are the steps.

  1. Go to Start and click Run.
  2. Type regedit and enter.
  3. Now navigate to the key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftNET Framework SetupNDPv2.0.50727].
  4. See whether the key has a Dword with name "Install" and what value it has.

If you see a value of 1 then .NET Framework is installed, if the value is 0 or the key is not there then you have to install it. It's ok to download from the Microsoft website.

Hallo Neil,

If the computer tells you that you need to install only .NET Framework so that you can install the other application, then you do not have to worry. You can readily get .NET Framework 2.0 for free on the internet.

Just follow this link and download .NET Framework 2.0 from there: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.

Once you have downloaded it, install it on your computer and then install the application that you were earlier trying to install again. It will not bring you the error message this time.

There is no other software apart from .NET Framework that you will need to install for the application to work. Once you have installed it, that is it.
