If this is the current status of your Windows XP machine whenever you connect it with the internet cable, maybe there is a problem with its network card. Try uninstalling your network card’s driver then shutdown your computer. After shutting down the machine, unplug it on the wall then open the CPU case.

Detach the network card from the slot then transfer it to the next available slot. Be sure to press the device to the slot firmly to properly connect it. After that, start the computer again then install the network card’s driver. Configure properly the device then connect the internet cable.

If you are still having a problem using your network card:

  1. Click Start then Control Panel.
  2. Click Network and Internet Connections then Network Connections.
  3. Right-click your network card then select Properties.
  4. Under General tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click Properties.
  5. Select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically then click OK.
