Normally, when a computer is left unattended for a very long time, the system will become idle. After a couple of minutes the screensaver will be activated and then another several minutes of being idle the screen will turn to black. This behavior is set in the Power Options in the Control Panel. It controls the power state of the computer when it has become idle for a very long time.

Power Options is also capable of turning off the hard disk after a specific time has elapsed after being idle. If you can still hear the fan running but you cannot turn it on then the system might have been frozen already and cannot power on back. If you are using a laptop, turn it upside down then remove the battery. Wait around five minutes before connecting the battery back to let it cool down a little bit.

Try it again and it should be back to normal. You can now turn it on normally again. If you have a tower CPU, just unplug it from the AC outlet for a few minutes and then plug it in again. You should be able to turn it back on after this. Sometimes when a computer is idle for very long hours the system freezes.

The freezing of the system is also caused sometimes by the programs currently running like the antivirus which runs idle scans when the machine is in idle state. This is the usual culprit of a frozen system.

Hi Hiram,

There are few causes and conditions apply to your problem, you can choose below steps :

1. Due to long-term of idle time, your HP Pavilion workstation will be in Hibernate or sleep status depends on your setup. Try to move your mouse or touch pad and try to do randoms click.

2. There is possibility that your workstation is hanged. Press the power button for few seconds (approximate 5 to 7 seconds) and your workstation will be powered off. Wait for few minutes and turn on again.
