The experienced laptop users choose between Windows XP and different versions of Windows Vista. Even if it is said that the best OS for laptops, you still have a reason to buy Windows XP due to its better performances on the same kind of hardware. Paying extra money for the newest versions of Windows Vista is for some people a waste of cash, because it is slower than the XP.

I must mention Windows 7 also, which is an amazing operating system for laptops thanks to the improvements over the other versions. The biggest concern is battery life. Windows 7 got plenty of new features but the battery isn't affected because of the effective power management.

The most popular operating system from these 3 is Windows XP. Its simplicity brought it up to the first place but also the system requirements that are pretty low. I recommend you this type of Windows because I have been using it for more than 5 years and I am not disappointed at all.

Actually, since it is not a Mac PC, you can install any operating system you want like Microsoft Windows or Linux. And if you prefer using Microsoft Windows, you have a great selection from Windows XP up to Windows 8.1. This means you can select between Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1.

For Microsoft Windows XP, you only need to have a Pentium processor with at least 233 MHz speed or faster. The smallest RAM you can use either with Home edition or Professional edition is 64 MB. But of course, the bigger the better since it’ll improve the performance of the machine and the operating system.

For Windows Vista, it requires a little faster processor around 800 MHz and at least 512 MB RAM. This is for the Home Basic edition. If you’ll be running the Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate edition, you need to have at least 1 GHz processor and a minimum of 1 GB RAM.

For Windows 7, your processor should be running at 1 GHz or faster and 1 GB RAM minimum. I know somebody in our neighborhood who tried running Windows 7 on their computer. His CPU is running on Pentium 4 3.20 GHz with only 512 MB RAM. Though it can support the speed of the processor since it is above the required minimum speed but the amount of installed RAM is way below what is required.

It is only half of the required RAM to run the operating system. The computer still starts and the operating system loads but the speed is really crawling. For Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, it requires at least 1 GHz processor or faster that supports PAE, SSE2, and NX and 1 GB RAM.
