Hi Tyrone,

Microsoft already has an official "Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats". This includes file formats with the extensions: docx, xlsx and pptx, which were introduced in Office 2007.

Download entire compatibility pack from here.

1. Right click the .xlsx file you want to convert
2. Select "Open With"
3. Select "Microsoft Open XML Converter"
4. Enter the opted filename for after converting the original file and then click on SAVE.

Regards,
Anyet

Below is the procedure to open the file xlsx file in the Microsoft Word 2003.
Open the Microsoft Word 2003 go to the Microsoft logo on the right corner. And then go to the open.
Find the xlsx file that you want to open. Select the file and then after that it will open. And then click on the save as in the menu. And it will display the options and you can select any version in which you want to save it and save it as. And it will also change the version of the file into the Microsoft version in which you saved the file. And then you can easily open it.

Unfortunately, you cannot open that file in Microsoft Office Excel 2003 because the file format used is a lot newer than the application. Microsoft Office applications like Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft Office Excel, and Microsoft Office PowerPoint are backward compatible. Meaning, the applications can open files that were created using a much older version of the program.

For example, Microsoft Office Word 2013 can open documents created with Microsoft Office Word 2010, 2007, and 2003. Microsoft Office applications are backward compatible but are not forward compatible which means they cannot open files created with a much newer version of the program.

The XLSX file you want to open is the default file format used in Microsoft Office Excel 2007 and higher that’s why you cannot open it in Microsoft Office Excel 2003. For Microsoft Office Excel 2003, the default file format used is XLS.

If you need to open that XLSX file but you don’t have Microsoft Office Excel 2007 or higher, you can upload it to Google Drive if you have a Google account and open the file in Google Sheets. If you have a Microsoft account, another way to open the file is to use Microsoft Office Excel Online. Go to Microsoft Office Online and click Microsoft Office Excel.
