One of my clients is using Excel 2000. The problem is he cannot open the Open Office Spreadsheet which came as attachment in an e-mail. Even after set the file association it does not work. Also checked the file to ensure the file is not corrupted.  But when trying to open the file it gives an error message which says ‘wrong file format or File is corrupted’. What is the problem? Is it because of the older Excel version? If anybody knows how to solve this, please help.

Since the file that you are trying to open was created using an open office spreadsheet and you are trying to open with excel 2000, then the reason why it is bringing that error is because of compatibility issues. The excel 2000 may not be having support for the format that the file was saved in using the open office spreadsheet, and therefore you will need to do the following as remedy to that:

  • You will need to contact the sender and ask then to save the document in a format that is compatible to excel 2000.
  • Otherwise you will need to try opening the document using the recent versions of excel like excel 2007 and 2010 and see if they will open.
