Old PC not working properly, please help

I have an old PC having Intel p4 and 1 GB ram please suggest me a method to increase its speed like processor replacement or adding ram Capacity. I can afford up to RS 5000, recently I tried to replace mine Processor and went to buy an Intel I3, but they told me that my motherboard Is not compatible with I3 and it must be replaced. Is it necessary to replace it, please help me?

Since it is an old PC, its processor P4 uses a different socket on the motherboard. If you want to change your entire configuration, you will need to shell out more than Rs. 5000/-, going by present market rates.

However, you could look to expend on your RAM make it 2 GB and that would result in a faster performance.
