check if your NvStartup (NvCpl.dll) is disabled, updating your NVIDIA driver might have change the settings. NvStartup is responsible for loading the NVIDIA control panel for your graphics card. to learn more about NvCpl.dll visit this site.

still not working? then double check if you driver is compatible with your hardware. Updating drivers in windows 7 and XP are different, also the driver might be corrupted. its also depends on the version of windows, if its 32-bit then install 32-bit drivers,

how to know if your XP is 32-bit? go to device manager, it should be on "General" tab, you'll know if its 32-bit if it has version date, if its 64-bit then you'll see it. updating manually is way better. if the driver is found not compatible then roll back you drivers, the driver can be rolled back to its previous version using the "Device manager" feature. after rolling back find another suitable driver.
