How does the hard disk get affected, when the data is being written and the laptop goes to sleep (by closing lid)? Will it simply stop the process or will it result in damaging the hard drive(bad sector or any similar problem?

Yes, mostly in many options the system stops processing the data written on the hard disk, but you can get rid of it If you will  follow these steps.

Just click the start menu, then, click the control panel. In the control Panel, there is an icon called Power Option. There, you will find many options like sleep hard drive, sleep computer after 5 or 10 or 20 minutes. You just click on these options and choose never to all of them. After this step, just click ok, now. your computer will sleep automatically.

You can write a data on your laptop. It will not go to sleep. While, if this option still remains open, your data might be lost or it will affect your hard disk for bad sectors, and any media problem can arise. So it's better to use these options to avoid any huge damage.
