No Audio Output Device is installed after Windows Update

I just updated my Windows Vista computer to Service Pack 2 when I received this error from my task bar. The error is:

No Audio Output Device is installed.

My audio is working perfectly fine before upgrading to Service Pack 2. I already checked the cords and its connection and set the settings for volume correctly but none seems to work.

What can I do to fix this? Help me on this. Thanks.

Follow the steps below, then try playing an audio file after each step and determine if you can hear any sound.

Step 1. Restart your computer.

  • After upgrading your computer to Service Pack 2, try to make a restart so all the changes from the installation will take effect. After the restart, try to play a sound file. If you can hear any sound then you are done, however continue with step 2.

Step 2. Plug another sound device.

  • Try plugging any external sound device like headsets, or try another set of speakers. If you can hear sounds then your problem is already solved. If you still cannot hear sound, then plug the original speakers and continue with the next step.

Step 3. Unplug the speakers.

  • Unplug the speakers or other sound devices, and then plug it again. Most sound cards that are compatible with Vista have a feature that detects sound devices plugged in your audio jack. After plugging it back, your computer will automatically detect it. If you can hear sounds then your problem is already solved. If you still cannot hear sound, then plug the original speakers and continue with the next step.

Step 4. Ensure that the default sound device is set correctly.

  • Click Start then type Sound in the start menu search box.
  • Click Sound in the search result.
  • Click on the Playback tab then take a look at the check mark on the default device. Mostly, the default device is Speakers. Ensure that the audio settings are configured properly by:
  •          a.) Select the playback device under Playback tab and then click Properties. Ensure that the default format under the advanced tab is set properly. Exit the window then go back to the previous window.
  •          b.)Select the playback device under the Playback tab. Click Configure and ensure that the configurations are set correctly.

If all the settings for your sound are properly set, you are using speakers as the sound device and the speakers are all set as the default device. Continue with the next step now.

c.)Click Set Default after selecting the sound device that you want as the default sound device.

d.)Click OK to save your settings and close the Sound dialog box.

If you can hear any sound then you are done, however continue with the next step.

Step 5. Verify that the driver for sound device is installed.

  • Click Start then type Device Manager on the search box then press Enter.
  • Expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers on the Device Manager box.

If there is no yellow mark beside each driver, then the driver for your sound device is properly installed.

Step 6. Update the Sound driver.

Step 7. Reload the current driver for sound.

  • Click Start then type Device Manager on the search box and then press Enter.
  • Expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers.
  • Locate the audio device.
  • Right-click the device then click Properties.
  • Click Uninstall under the Driver tab
  • Ensure that the check box beside the Delete the Driver Software for this device is cleared then click OK
  • Click the Action Menu under Device Manager Box and then click Scan for Hardware Changes.

You will receive a message stating that the hardware device is already installed, and then the previously uninstalled  audio device will appear in Device Manager.

  • Close the Device Manager window.

The problem could be that after updating, the sound drivers have been disabled.

To enable the drivers go to the start menu – right click on my computer – click on manage – device manager – click on sound, video and game controllers and see what is the name of the sound device.

If the sound device has been disabled, right click on the icon to enable the device.

If the sound driver is not listed, click on the other devices and click on the multimedia audio controller. Right click on the icon and click on update the driver. Follows the installation and after you finish restart the computer.
