You haven't mentioned the OS you are using. I suppose its Windows OS.

There are lots of freeware in the market for PC auditing & checking the legality of the software.

You can choose anyone from below for auditing.

Personally I used Belarc Advisor which is very good at auditing. You can get it here.

You can also use WinAudit or e-z audit which you can get here and also here respectively.

Portable software leaves little or no traces in the registry.

So, if you are using any portable software its hard to detect the legality of it.

To trace using of any portable software you can give this a try.
