I have a feeling that my troubles are connected to the CA. I am not knowledgeable on this topic though; I would like some to know whether it should be installed before the NPS or not. Any walkthrough, how-to manual which explains this in a comprehensible way would be much welcome.
Need explanation on CA, NPS installation
During the installation of the AD CS and NPS on your windows server, the NPS is installed first and then the CA is installed later.
The first step when doing the installation is joining the server to the domain you are on, and you will then restart the computer, after which you will open the server manager. You will then click on the roles node followed by the add roles, and then on the server screen, you will be needed to select the AD CS and then the NP and AS. You will select the NPS at this point and then leave the default certification authority as it is.
In the next step you will select the enterprise for the type AD CS, and then in the step that follows is where you choose the root CA for the CA type. You will then just continue with the wizard till it finishes.
