My taskbar doubled in size

Hey,

This is another day at work and I got another issue. This is my first time posting here on TechyV. I just want to try if my problem in my desktop computer at work will be resolved.

Firstly, I am using an HP machine that is operating in Windows XP Professional. We got loads of tools at work and I am fond of using the quick launch as shortcut. Today we got another added tool, and I have added it to my quick launch.

However, suddenly, my task bar doubled in size. I would prefer to see just an arrow icon for me to click on if I do have lots of application shortcut in my quick launch already. I am not used to seeing my quick launch this big.

Please help me with ways on how to get my taskbar back to its original size.

  1. Control Panel > Display properties > Appearance > check to see which style is currently selected (sounds like you may have "classic" now selected as it will allow a two tier taskbar).
  2. Change if required.
  3. If that's not your problem continue on to "Taskbar and start menu" (control panel) > uncheck "auto hide the taskbar" if it's selected. Uncheck "lock taskbar" if it's selected.
  4. Close out of Control Panel > Drag the top of the taskbar back to the desired size and then right click on it and "lock the taskbar".
  5. If none of this works run "System restore" and back it up a day or so and that should cure your problem.

Alternate Method 1: A quick fix that often works if you use the Quick Launch bar is to right click on the Task Bar, go to Toolbars and uncheck Quick Launch. The Taskbar usually returns to normal size and then you can re-enable Quick Launch.

Alternative Method 2:There are little vertical bars that mark off the positions for the running programs and the quick task bar. I discovered I could drag those around and get the running programs to the right of the quick task bar icons and the task bar lined up thin the way we like it again.

Hope this helps!
