Hello

My PC is 2 years old. It has the following configuration

  • The OS is Windows XP
  • Hard drive 80 GB
  • RAM 1 GB (DDR 1)
The problem is that it switches off automatically.

I replaced the fan in the CPU unit a few months ago but it’s still going the same.

One of my friends told me that it’s a hardware problem but I don't know which one I need to replace.

Please tell me, which hardware needs to replace to solve this problem.

You problem is not explained properly with symptoms.

A computer may shut down automatically because of the different reasons. Even your friend is telling hardware problem, you had better check whether there are any viruses cause this problem. Please do a full clean up with an updated virus guard

If the problem still exists after the above remedy check whether there is a problem in power supply. You can check the voltages and amps and even you can fix it to another computer to exactly diagnose the problem.

Also, check whether you RAMs are working properly. Sometimes this may happen due to malfunctioning of the CPU fans. Please diagnose the above exact issue and repair or replace the relevant component.

Imrankhang,

There are many reasons why your PC might be restarting automatically . It might be due to accumulated dirt on the motherboard that causes some devices not to have a good contact with their slots, you might have a peripheral (RAM, VGA card, PCI card, Hard Drive, Optical Drive) that is about to fail; power connectors that may have a loose connection to your peripheral device, lastly you might have thermal paste that might have dried up and needs reconditioning. Here are some steps that might resolve your problem:

1. Disassemble your PC and make sure there are no accumulation of dust and dirt on the motherboard and peripherals.

2. You can clean the dirty gold contacts by rubbing them with a pencil eraser until they shine again.

3. Ensure that all your power connectors are securely and firmly seated on the plugs.

4. Clean up the contacts with dried up thermal compound and reapply fresh thermal paste. Make sure the thermal compound do not step into the contacts so be careful.

5. Verify all peripherals are dirt free and properly seated on their respective slots.

6. Ensure all data connectors are still pliant and easy to manipulate. Replace any connector that seems brittle and hard to reform.

7. Reassemble your PC and restart normally. You may need to run benchmark tests to check your peripherals to know if they are failing and would need to be replaced.

Happy Computing,
