Yes you have to since you can’t even download the Lion without the snow leopard – Mac OS X 10.6. The lion is available for download at the App store which was released in Mac OS X 10.6. Do you see my point? You need the Snow Leopard so that you can download the Lion.

Hello,

I see that you want to install Lion but you only have Leopard. As they have said, if you want to install Lion using Leopard, you will need Snow Leopard, which costs around $29. But, if you already have purchased a Lion and you don't want to buy another OS just to install Lion then you need to do the following:

– Back up all your important data. Use whatever back up software you can find. I would recommend Carbon Copy Cloner.

– Test to see if the back up is running.

– Make sure you have a bootable Lion install drive.

– Format your disk that has the Leopard OS.

– Reinstall your OS using the Lion OS.

– After the OS is done installing, run your software to retrieve your backed up files.

Hope this helps.
