I have HP laptop and sometimes it starts to make weird noises, continuous clicking like sound. I checked the fan it seemed all right. Though my laptop is working fine but still I am worried about the noise. Is it something serious? Do I need to consult with the company, laptop is not in warranty anymore.

Hi Debrajbartels,

I'm sorry to hear your that you are experiencing these problems. It could be the hard drive making these sounds as well as other parts. The best way to solve this problem is by taking your laptop to a certified technician and letting them diagnose the problem. From there they will know how to further address the situation.

I hope this helped.

If you have a laptop and you hear continuous clicking sounds, it definitely doesn’t come from the cooling fan because cooling fans don’t create clicking sounds. Clicking sounds normally come from hard drives and when you hear this, you need to be alarmed. When a hard drive starts clicking or creates clicking sounds, it is a sign of an impending failure.

Hard drive

Normally, a few clicks aren’t that bad. Your computer probably just hit a bad area on the hard drive or a bad sector. Though this might cause your computer to freeze, it can still be fixed by running a disk utility application like CHKDSK. But if the clicking seems to be continuous, you need to back up your data on a separate drive because your hard drive is definitely failing.

It’s hard to tell when will the drive stops working. After backing up your data, you need to replace your hard drive with a new one. You cannot fix a failing hard drive.
