I have a samsung drive that was just fine and recently is selective in reading the disks, I cannot read the contents on some DVDs that seem to be working when placed in other computers, what could be the problem? I have tried to clean the DVD with a cleaner but still no results. Is there a setting that might have changed this?

Hello,

Inspect the drive for physical damage: missing or loose components, cracks, burns, melting, or irregularities. When the device operates, listen for unusual sounds. Check for foreign objects within the device. If all appears normal, attach the device to other machines to see how it behaves. Also, try using a different power source for the device both in terms of the type of cord (don't use USB) and the physical outlet (don't connect it to an outlet with multiple devices plugged in).

If an optical drive like a DVD drive suddenly stops reading discs or suddenly becomes selective on the disc that it is reading, you need to clean the lens. It is probably just dirty. Cleaning the lens will allow the drive to read properly again. If you have a DVD cleaner for your DVD player, you can use it to clean the lens of the optical drive.

You can also just buy it from a local computer store or buy it online like this one on Amazon: Maxell 190059 DVD Only Lens Cleaner. It costs $8.64. You can also buy this one on eBay: Maxell Cd-340 CD Lens Cleaner.

If this doesn’t work or you can’t buy, another way is to clean the disc itself by washing your CD with a solution of water and baby shampoo. After washing, wipe it dry with a lint-free cloth.
