Hallo,

Despite having power supply, my computer cannot boot. I have tried using the windows CD but there is no solution. Is the display monitor with the problem or the modem or could it be some other device that I do not know? I am clueless.

Thanks for your help.

Hi James,

Your problem could be a number of reasons. If you tried using the windows CD it means your monitor's still working.
If you have tried booting from the CD and still nothing, it could be faulty Hardware. You need to remove any newly installed hardware before your computer messed up. Also try to check your PC for loose connections. Try removing each hardware and place them back on more securely. If nothing's changed, then it could be a virus / malware. Try inserting your HD in another PC to clean it up. Hope this helps.

Your problem is not clear. Does your computer on but not booting windows setup disk? Does not your computer turn on at all? Does your computer turn on and screen becomes black? However I think there is a problem with your RAM. Before performing any action please turn of power source to be safe from electric shock. Remove your memory and turn on your PC. If your computer has a continuous beep sound then your motherboard is okay. Now replace the memory on another slot. Does it work? If not the problem is that your RAM is useless. Change it.  A article on https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-fix-a-computer-that-wont-turn-on-2624450 has described solutions based on different symptoms. You may visit it.

If you want to boot from the CD or the Windows setup CD or DVD, you need to check first in the BIOS if your optical drive is set as first boot. To do this, start or restart your computer then press Del, Delete, F2, or whichever key is used to go to the BIOS.

In the BIOS, navigate to the “Boot” section then change the setting for the hard drive and the CD drive. Configure the CD drive as first boot device and the hard drive as the second boot device. In this setup, if there is a bootable CD inside the optical drive, it will automatically boot the computer from the CD when you start the machine.

If this doesn’t work, try cleaning the lens of your optical drive. You can use the lens cleaner of your DVD player or you can buy one from a local computer store. If this doesn’t work, try cleaning the disc itself by washing your CD with a solution of water and baby shampoo. After washing, wipe it dry with a lint-free cloth.

If this doesn’t work, try inserting the disc on a different computer with a working optical drive then see if it works there. If the other computer was able to boot from the CD, try cleaning the lens of your optical drive with one of the following. Try checking out the following optical lens cleaner on eBay:

  • DVD CD Players Laser Lens Cleaner – this lens cleaner costs $4.55 and available for free shipping. See details for shipping worldwide. Item is located in China.
  • DVD & CD Laser Lens Cleaner – this one costs $8.82 and ships worldwide. Seller doesn’t offer free shipping. Item is located in the United States.
  • DVD Lens Cleaner – the price of this one is a bit higher than the first two, costs $14.99. Seller doesn’t offer free shipping and ships to select countries only. Item is located in the United States.
