My computer is having a problem communicating with scanner

Hi,

I have an HP Scanjet 4370 scanner and it was fine until my sister plugged in her camera to upload pictures in the internet. After detaching the camera from the Vista computer, the setup was back to how it was before. But I could not make my scanner to work.

The physical connections were okay, the scanner is turned on, and no settings were changed. But, why do I keep on getting the error that there is a problem communicating with the scanner?

Thanks.

Hi Blake!

The problem may be caused by various factors. So thorough troubleshooting is needed and most probably you are going to uninstall and reinstall it.

  1. First Check the device if it’s properly connected. Check in both ends. Both in the scanner end and on your computers end.
  2. Check the computer it the device is connected or if the computer can detect it.
  • In the lower right of the screen beside the time and date, there will be a pop-out message if the device is detected.
  • If not detected, uninstall the program and restart the computer then reinstall it.

Hi

The error and situation you have mentioned is pointing to the issue that has been created when a digital camera is plugged in to the computer, and however you remove it after you have done your work, but it has make the changes in your registry settings before that. There can b more than one issues with this, all you need to do is to check the settings one by one and make changes one by one, if the problem is still there then try next issue with solution as I have mentioned here.

Firstly, it can be issue with the settings of your scanner, may be when a digital camera was connected then some minor change in the settings has be done, you need to check it exactly, if you are not sure then there is a option in all scanner settings that is “Restore Default Settings”. Select that option and restart your computer again and check the scanner working again.

Secondly, it can be issue with your ram or temp cache, because some times when you connect your digital cameras with your computer, all the images you have transferred take place temporarily in your computer ram, it makes your ram space filled. And when you are working with scanners you need a lot of cache memory free because when the scanner scans the image, firstly it takes place it in cache before you save it on your hard disk. To solve this issue you need to delete all temp files, history and all other files that makes your cache and ram full. After that restart your computer again and check the scanner working again.

If the problem is still there, un-install and re-install all the required software and settings for your scanner and check now. Hope so all these can be helpful for you.

Since the problem started after uploading some photos, try scanning your computer for possible virus infection. Download Sophos Virus Removal Tool and install it. Once installed, start Sophos then wait for the virus signature database to get updated. When updating is complete, click to start scanning your computer. The tool scans everything on your computer including external devices connected via USB port.

When a virus is found at the end of the scan, remove it then repeat the scan over and over until it no longer detects a virus. If this doesn’t work, try transferring the connection to another USB port. Use all available USB ports as necessary to check the problem.

By default, there are four USB ports (4) at the back of the CPU including one or more USB ports in the front panel if you have it. If this doesn’t work, uninstall the printer software from your computer then download the driver again from the HP website. Download the free version of Revo Uninstaller and install it.

Once installed, start Revo Uninstaller then select your HP scanner software among the applications and click “Uninstall”. Follow the normal uninstall process. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click to restart later. When uninstall is complete, click “Scan” to scan your computer for any leftover files and delete everything it finds. This removes everything the program created on your computer.

When it is finished, close Revo Uninstaller then restart the computer. After booting, go to HP Scanjet 4370 Photo Scanner to download the latest software. Here, check that your correct operating system is selected. If the page detected the wrong platform, click “Change” then select your correct operating system. Download all available software for your scanner then see if it works.

If the problem continues, try using a different USB cable or purchase a new USB cable for your scanner.
